Been playing with Google Wave for a while now and it doesn’t strike me as brilliant. Having said that, that’s not to say there’s no use for it from a social media point of view – and it could be quite handy for businesses in Scotland who are spread over multiple locations.

Here’s where it could be useful:

  • For taking minutes at meetings. Instead of waiting for hours or days after a meeting for the action points, it could be done real-time. People in the meeting could add/edit while others with an interest but not physically present could jump in onto the wave.
  • Collaboration on a big document. Say you have multiple offices across the country. Instead of everyone writing up their little bit of a report or document and passing it, everyone can chip in at once.
  • Editing documents with clients. In PR – and I once got into trouble for pointing this out, so don’t tell anyone – you can have the need to rewrite and tinker with press releases. Now the normal process of that can be very painstaking but with Wave you can make the amends on the spot and have it approved in real-time. Result.
  • For a virutal  spot at an event, swap documents and so on. I think Twitter and hashtags do this quite well already, but some people see this as a use as well.

Anyone else spotted potential for Wave? I think it’ll take a while before we see something useful come out of the APIs, but it could be handy.
