As previously mentioned, I was part of a CIPR discussion for students at Stirling University on aspects of PR, networking and social media – it was great fun. All of the speakers were well on form as were the students (might even see some at the next few social media dinners), asking some really good, probing questions. And, as is the sign of a good event, I learned a few new things, but also had some things reinforced:

  1. Social media should be part of PR (in execution, concept and ongoing), not standalone (on which note, I am delighted to see the CIPR has finally set up a Social Media team. It baffled me that the CIPR was so slow in this and as such I now feel compelled, after moaning about this issue for years in the pub, to join)
  2. In terms of speed, especially in a crisis, social media absolutely WALLOPS traditional press – but you need to know where to look or at least how to look.
  3. Networking takes on many aspects and you should make it work on your terms.

Anyway, I would love to say that I was really cunning and deliberately ended on a cliffhanger during my slot but the truth of the matter is that I ran out of time, so as promised, here’s the full presentation (sorry it took so long to get up, Keynote was giving me hell).

I’ve also got an iPod-friendly version for anyone who wants to have this on their iPod, iTunes or just on their desktop. Just drop me a line if you want it (email address at the top of the page).

(A couple of points: the video clip won’t autoplay, click on the link under it for that and yes, some of the text is small unless you go fullscreen. Next time I do one of these, we’ll make it a bit better and add the audio to the presentation.)

For those happy with SlideShare though: enjoy.
